Historical Context

John Calvin Perry was born in 1837 to parents Caleb and Ruth Harriet (Truesdell) Perry. Caleb and Ruth moved to the Hamlet of Delphi, New York from Albany, New York around 1827. They set up a tannery on the west side of the Hamlet. John Calvin was born in July of 1837. Father Caleb was not happy about John Calvin’s desire to become an artist. But Perry did manage to receive formal art training at the local Cazenovia Seminary and at Castleton College in Vermont.
Perry married Catherine Baker of the New Woodstock, New York area, and they had four children: Perdita, Albert, John, and Ruth Harriet. The John Calvin family lived in Delphi and earned their living mostly through farming.
John Calvin taught art at Cazenovia Seminary and Hamilton College. He gave art lessons in several neighboring communities of Central New York, including Fabius, DeRuyter, New Woodstock, Truxton, Manlius, and Syracuse. He did commission portraits including death portraits. In an era when photographs were rare or non-existent, the artist would make a sketch of the family member who was dying or recently deceased, then create an oil-painting portrait from the sketch.
Perry did many Central New York landscape paintings. He is best represented, as an artist, by both the landscapes and the commissioned portraits.
Perry kept detailed diaries of his life, and these are available today. In them, he describes his work on various paintings, explaining his techniques, colors used, the frustrations and challenges he faced, and the ways he resolved them. He also talked extensively about his everyday life and the happenings in the community and with his neighbors. These documents provide rich detail about life in Central New York in the mid- to late-1800s.
Perry spent his entire life in the Central New York area. He, his wife, and his parents are buried in the Delphi Church cemetery in the Hamlet of Delphi Falls, Town of Pompey, Onondaga County, NY. He actually designed the gravestones for his family plot. Perry died in 1894.

Scope of Collection

This collection contains drawings and paintings by John Calvin Perry. Many of the works are landscapes depicting locations in Central New York, as well as California and Europe. Also included are portraits of Perry's family, neighbors, and also some examples of death portraits.

Collection Facts

Historical Context

Lynbrook is an incorporated village of about 19,000 residents in southern Nassau County. It lies just a mile from Hewlett Bay. It was settled around 1790 when the first church was constructed, and it remained a small, isolated, farming and fishing community until the mid-1800s when a corduroy road and later a railroad line were extended through the sleepy hamlet. By 1890, a downtown of about twenty business had developed along Atlantic Avenue near the Five Corners. In 1911, the hamlet became an incorporated village. In the 1920s, many of Lynbrook’s farms were subdivided into residential lots, and it became the fastest growing village in Nassau County. Today it is a bedroom suburb of New York City, with a 35-minute railroad commute. It has a reasonably vibrant downtown of about 150 stores and restaurants along with some light industry, particularly financial services.

Scope of Collection

The Lynbrook postcard collection has over 200 items. Many of them are from the period 1910 - 1950. They include street scenes, hotels, inns, movie houses, businesses, and private residences. Some capture the interiors of buildings, especially of restaurants. They are both black and white and colorized.

Town of Pompey Historical Society

About

The Town of Pompey Historical Society was established in 1976 as a result of the United States Bicentennial Celebration. The Town of Pompey Bicentennial Committee had planned two weeks of activities to celebrate this memorable occasion. The committee wanted to have lasting tributes after July 1976. It was decided that organizing a historical society and writing and publishing a two-volume book (Pompey, Our Town in Profile) would accomplish that goal.

Members of the PHS collect, acquire, preserve and catalog not only objects but oral traditions and recorded information about the Town of Pompey. We share this information through meetings, exhibits, publications, and educational programs. We also are responding to a growing number of genealogical inquiries. These activities are made possible by donations, fundraisers and grants from government as well as private foundations and agencies. Membership contributions are also a major source of income for the Society - we need your support!

The campus consists of the William G. Pomeroy Research Center and Museum, the Pomeroy - Coe Heritage Center, and Pompey Center One Room Schoolhouse. The Town of Pompey Historical Museum and Research Center is located across from the Town Hall at the corner of Pompey Center Road and Route 20.

Town of Pompey Historical Society is a member of the Central New York Library Resources Council.

Art Oneida

Collection Facts

Extent:
83
Dates of Original:
1871 - 2016

Historical Context

ArtOneida travels across 5 different sections of Oneida county: the Southern, Northwestern, and Northeastern parts of the county, along with the Utica area and the Griffiss International Sculpture Garden in Rome. The ArtOneida team traveled far and wide across the county to find public art. Along the way they talked to the artists, their families, and others who treasure this art as a part of their environment. The stories told in ArtOneida share how the artwork is entwined with the rich history of Oneida County. The main idea of the project is to get Oneida residents and visitors out looking at and discussing the diverse public art throughout the county, promoting tourism to all areas. The artwork ranges from 19th century monuments of local heroes to clever chainsaw carvings, from community created murals to contemporary sculpture at Griffiss International Sculpture Garden, and from intricate stained glass to the “yarn-bombs” a local artist has installed around Utica, encasing lightposts with brightly striped knitted yarn. The works span a range from 1871 to 2016. For those living in or visiting Oneida County, you might just be surprised to find artwork right around the corner! Or perhaps you can find out more about that sculpture or mural that you pass every day on your way to work or school. Don’t take it for granted: stop and take a closer look.

Scope of Collection

The ArtOneida project has documented over 150 works of public art across Oneida County, representing over 130 years of history, from the 1870s to 2010s. The art represented includes a wide variety of both outdoor and indoor sculpture, monuments, murals, stained glass, and even roadside attractions. Just over 50 of these works were also highlighted in a book to commemorate the project, titled ArtOneida, available at local sellers or online. The book's companion website at ArtOneida.org also shares more photographs and information about all the artwork, including an interactive map.
