Historical Context

The Stockbridge-Munsee are an Indigenous community that descended from the Mohicans and adopted Christianity brought by European missionaries.  As pressure from settlers increased in New England, they accepted the invitation of the Oneida Nation to relocate to Oneida County, NY.  THe group settled into what became New Stockbridge, later renamed Stockbridge, in the mid-1780s.  Between the late 1810s and 1820s, they were compelled to sell their land in New York State and move further west.  The community ultimately settled in modern-day Wisconsin.
