Lester “Andy” Gerard (1929-2013) was an amateur photographer and filmmaker who documented the sports car and formula one races at Watkins Glen, N.Y., from 1955 to 1964. His work evidences considerable skill and craftmanship, making his unique record of events not only historically important but aesthetically pleasing. His access to normally restricted areas of the race circuit allowed him gain “up front and close” proximity to drivers and vehicles in the paddock, pit and start/finish areas. The relatively casual nature of activities at the Watkins Glen race circuit in the early days of motorsports allowed Gerard to capture unique, candid images of the legendary drivers and racing machines that dominated the sport.
