Historical Context

Edith Sturgess was a student at the Oneonta Normal School at the turn of the century, and her 1901 mathematics notebook shows how mathematics was taught at the time. 

Edith Sturgess was born in 1881 in Stamford, in Delaware County.  She attended the Oneonta Normal School and in the early 1900s, worked as preceptress at Roxbury High School.  She married Clarence Gould in 1913.  She died in 1972.

This project was completed by SUNY Oneonta Students Jaime Stark and CeCe Bushaw for Professor Knudson's History of Math class in the Fall of 2025.
