Historical Context

Preservation Long Island’s Headquarters is located inside the old Cold Spring Harbor Methodist Episcopal Church, built in 1842 by Israel Valentine (1764–1846) during the village’s heyday of whaling. After serving its congregation for 149 years, the church closed its doors and Preservation Long Island acquired the building in 1996 for adaptive reuse as its exhibition gallery, program and meeting space, and administrative offices.

Scope of Collection

This collection contains images and descriptive data for 11 objects, all from the 18th century. These pieces include highlights from Preservation Long Island’s collection of furniture made and used across the region.

This collection was digitized as part of Preservation Long Island’s Long Island Furniture Project. This initiative aims to reexamine furniture made and used locally and enhance its accessibility to 21st-century researchers and the public. The digitization of Preservation Long Island’s furniture collection was supported by a grant provided by the Long Island Library Resources Council in 2025.
