Scope of Collection

The Lansing Family Papers is a collection of correspondence and documents created and received by Abraham G. Lansing (1756-1834), Gerritt G. Lansing (1760-1831), John Ten Eyck Lansing Jr. (1754-1839), Jane Ann Stewart Lansing (1799-1864), Catharine Ten Eyck Lansing Boyd (1825-1901), their families and descendants. The correspondence relates to property owned by the Lansing family around Fonda, NY, and Oriskany, NY, and conveys family news. Additional documents include the marriage certificate for Robert Boyd (1777-1867) and Mary Scott (1783-1857), receipts for goods and services, reports on the status of contracts with tenants, a morning prayer said by the Lansing family, and pages from an album owned by Catharine Ten Eyck Lansing Boyd (1825-1901). Also included are printed materials about the lives of Robert H. Boyd (1824-1899) and Abraham Lansing (1835-1899).

The major figures in this collection are brothers Abraham G. Lansing, Gerritt G. Lansing, and John Ten Eyck Lansing Jr., who were prominent citizens of Albany, NY during and after the American Revolution. Other major figures are Jane Ann Stewart Lansing, and Catharine Ten Eyck Lansing Boyd. Catharine was the grand-niece of Abraham G. Lansing, and married Robert Hawthorn Boyd (1824-1899) of Albany, NY. Jane Ann was Catharine’s mother.

The correspondence discusses land purchases, sales, and leases in the Fonda and Oriskany Patents in NY, rent charges, moving, new households, and family news, including illnesses such as breast cancer suffered by Cornelia Ray Lansing (1757-1834). Major world and national events such as the end of the War of 1812 are also discussed in the correspondence.
