In the 1870s Rockville Centre was home to about a dozen sea captains. They found RVC to be the perfect location to give seafarers access to both the ocean and a charming, burgeoning village. Many lived along Village Avenue. Others along Maple Avenue. The avenue that connected Centre and Village Avenues was completed in 1874 and named “Maine” in honor of these sea captains who hailed from that state.
