Historical Context

The Town of Mentz is located in central Cayuga County, just north of Auburn.  It was originally known as the Town of Jefferson before its renaming to Mentz in 1808.   The Village of Port Byron is within the Town of Mentz.  Part of the town were separated in 1859 to create the towns of Montezuma and Throop.

Scope of Collection

This collection includes some of the earliest records of the Town, including a book defining the boundaries of the town from 1812 onward, town road records beginning in 1828,  court proceedings from the 1860s and 1870s, and a book of voting records beginning in 1803.
There is also a book of records that includes the Election of Officers from 1804 onward, road surveys, and school district boundaries.
