Historical Context

Keuka College was founded in 1890 by George Harvey Ball (1819–1907) as a women's college that would provide a high-level education to all deserving students, regardless of economic background.  It became a coeducational college in 1985.

The first yearbook was published in 1925.  The 1925 yearbook explains: "By the vote of the student body, the name Kiondaga was chosen, meaning "The Oak Tree” in the Iroquois tongue, thus combining Indian lore with Keuka’s noble symbol of the oak.
