The Levittown Public Library was established in October of 1950 in Levittown, New York, and first opened on June 30, 1951, in a rent-free double storefront in the South Village Green provided by Levitt & Sons. The Library Board President, Robert W. Martin, organized the library’s relocation, which was approved by the town in 1961. In 1963, Levittown Public Library relocated to its present address on Bluegrass Lane.
In order to capture the growing number of events, programs, and services to the community, the Library hired photographers and sought assistance from staff members to photograph these activities. Many of the photographs taken were published in the press to promote the library throughout Levittown and surrounding communities.
Scope of Collection
The Publicity Photographs Collection consists of mostly black and white photographs, negatives, and contact sheets depicting various events, activities, and services in Levittown Public Library from 1951-1998. In addition, there are a few photographs in color and on slides. Press releases accompany many of the photographs. The early years are well documented, but there are some gaps between 1978 and 1998.
