Historical Context

Herbert Sidney Pratt (1892-1978) was born on Powells Lane in Westbury, New York and was the son of Sidney and Mary Pratt. He went to school in Westbury and worked at Hicks Nursery from 1911 to 1917 when the US Army sent him to France during WWI.  When he returned he went into the furniture repair and restoration business. In the 1960s he furnished a bedroom in the Powell House at Old Bethpage Restoration Village with furniture he’d inherited. He married Gertrude F. Main in 1924. They had one son, Samuel. Pratt took up painting as a child and is known in Jericho for his collection of paintings of “Old Long Island Houses: 1637-1850.” He gifted five paintings to the Jericho Public Library.

Scope of Collection
